At its August meeting, the Pacific
Beach Democratic Club voted to oppose Proposition 85, which would limit a
woman’s right to an abortion.
“In a perfect world parents and their
children would have open communication,” said Martitza
Gates, Club President. “In reality, a
young woman who does not tell her parents about an unintended pregnancy
usually has good reasons for her decision. This proposition
has little to do with protecting children; instead it is about
chipping away at women's reproductive freedoms.”
Proposition 85 prohibits physicians
from performing abortions on unemancipated minors until 48 hours after the
physician has notified her parents, unless the woman has obtained a court
exemption.
At its meeting of September 10, the
Pacific Beach Democratic Club will vote on Propositions 84 and 86, which regard
water quality and a tobacco tax, respectively.
